Visualizing Our 8-80 Village Pathways Through Community Mapmaking | Haliburton Village, Ontario
In 2003, Pamela Marsales embarked on an advocacy path showing leadership by applying urbanist ideals to a rural setting. Initiatives ranged from regional trail and greenway planning to leading Sunday Rambles and creating a community bike hub in an abandoned caboose. Always imagining new ways to engage the public, there is no slowing down at 70 years young. Energies are now hyper-focused on the village pathways of Haliburton. Current changemaking efforts aim to revive this dormant network into vibrant activity for all ages.
About the Project
Visualizing our 8-80 Village Pathways through community mapmaking will create an innovative community-made map. The process will involve discovery, conveying routes visually and describing them intuitively. People will be invited to contribute hand-drawn versions of their own walking and biking routes to favourite destinations. Celebrating individuality while finding a shared vision, a newly imagined network will emerge, inviting people to navigate the village by foot or bike vs car. An 8-80 lens will fine-tune the map's final design. The illustration will be as powerful as a scent trail to an alert dog on a walk through the forest.
