Stories of the North | Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Kerry Yang is a second-generation Chinese-Canadian student studying health sciences at McMaster University. Kerry had the unique experience of growing up in Northern Ontario, where she often grappled with her cultural identity. Kerry's lived experiences inspired the creation of Culture of the North, a project to explore and address the barriers BIPOC youth faced in Northern Ontario through cultural arts workshops, BIPOC libraries, and more. This experience empowered her to become the representation I grew up searching for to spark change for future generations of BIPOC youth.

About the Project

BIPOC youth in Northern Ontario often lack the cultural representation and education to feel empowered in their cultural identities. When we can’t find the representation for ourselves, we must become the representation for others. That is the inspiration behind Stories of the North, which will be an outlet of expression for BIPOC youth to amplify their voices, share their stories, and empower their cultural identities. It will be a platform for the storytelling of cultural experiences through diverse formats– whether that’s through writing, poetry, music, film, visual art, or even cultural recipes.
